O365 User Experience Updates

Aug 9, 2018 by Trey Mayer

When it comes to getting work done, Microsoft Office 365 (O365) is the solution businesses rely on for productivity. The applications within O365 are as robust as they are powerful.

Unfortunately, as Microsoft’s apps have become more complex, so too has the user experience.

Sometimes, O365 apps are hard to grasp, hard to use and don’t feel accessible, creating a confusing and frustrating user experience. Most users want a simple interface, but added features are getting in the way.

Microsoft is aware of the challenge users are facing and is actively deploying user experience updates for its premier apps: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote and Outlook. These updates are exclusive to Office.com and Office 365 and will be deployed over time.

The initial planned O365 updates include:

1) Simplified ribbon

Focus is the mission here. This new experience will help users focus on their work while still being able to collaborate efficiently with others.

Users who prefer to dedicate more screen real estate to commands can still do so with the classic three-line ribbon view. This update will be first featured in Word.

2) New colors and icons

New, scalable icons featuring new colors and crisp, clean lines will be released to help modernize the user experience. These graphics will also help the user experience feel more inclusive and accessible.

3) Search

Perhaps the most significant update, robust search functionality will provide users access to commands, content and people. AI and the Microsoft Graph will deliver search recommendations by simply placing your cursor in the search box.

Microsoft will be closely monitoring usage and feedback from these updates as they roll out over the next few months.
